THE FROG IN HOT WATER
-
Remember the little frog your science teacher told you about in third grade? How the frog will grow used to the water, and though it is slowly heated, will stay put even if the water begins to boil. It’s an issue of comfort.
Our lives are not too different. We have pressure from our boss, spouse, finances, family, relationship, our future, and from the world. Too often we sit idle while our lives boil around us. Truly, we live in difficult days.
The Apostle Paul spoke to this. In his second letter to Timothy, he wrote,
“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NASB, emphasis mine.
Yet regardless of this age and the struggles we all face, we are called to be salt and light, a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Different from the world around us. A different temperature from the environment we sit in. And though we may be tempted to be the frog, surrounded by the world, even becoming like the world, we simply cannot.
We cannot conform to this age. We cannot be lulled to sleep, forgetting what we are to be about. We must wake up.
“Do this, understanding the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep.” Romans 13:11
